Painting over existing wallpaper is not recommended. The moisture content in paint can cause the wallpaper surface to bubble. The added weight of an oil primer plus two coats of paint can cause the wallpaper, and all your hard work, to simply peel off the wall. However, there are circumstances that make this the only forseeable choice, in these cases, we recommend using an oil primer (SuPRIME S1014) to seal the surface and prevent the color of the wallpaper from bleeding thru the paint surface. Start with a small test section, if the paper bubbles or peels, it is best to strip the wallpaper completely, prime and paint. Keep in mind that wallpaper does have seams and even if they don't show in the pattern of the wallpaper, they may show after being painted.
Can I wallpaper over existing wallpaper?
This is also, not recommended, the added weight of vinyl over vinyl paste and a second layer of wallpaper can be too much and cause the paper to peel. However, if the existing paper is secure and cannot be removed, vinyl over vinyl paste must be used, even with prepasted paper. The prepasted adhesive will not adhere to the vinyl surface on most wallpapers.
Do I need to prime my walls before I paint?
Always recommended. Primer seals the surface. New materials, drywall, wood surfaces, masonry, etc. must be primed before painting. New homes usually have this done by the builder. If you paint in a new home and your color is fading into the wall, you may want to use an additional coat of primer, then two top coats of color.
Primer helps ensure a uniform surface. Applying primer in an even layer results in the sheen level being consistent. If the primer is not properly applied, spots of "flat" will show where the paint has absorbed into the surface.
Primer helps paint adhere to the surface. To get the coverage listed (usually 300 to 400 sq.ft.) primer is a must, simply put, it keeps the paint stuck to the wall.
Primer is used to cover stains, scuffs and darker colors. Oil based primers are considered stain-sealers, meaning for most cases, whatever stain is on your wall, the primer will cover that and prevent the stain from bleeding through to the next paint layer. Going over a dark color with a lighter color requires primer, usually these primers can be tinted with approximately 1/4 the color content of your top coat. This ensures that the darker color is sealed behind the primer and your lighter shade will not appear "dirty" or "dusty." Going over a light color with a dark color requires primer to retain the deep intensity of the color. These primers are also usually tinted to 1/4 the color of the top coat. For very red colors, primers are usually tinted to gray, the pigment used in red paint is generally less opaque than other pigments and gray primer helps to strengthen the red pigment to give a more accurate color.
There are specialty primers for masonry, wood, wallcoverings and metals. These are made to address each materials specific demands. Let us know what your project entails and we will be happy to assist you in your selection.
What sheen is right for my project?
The sheen of paint refers to the degree which the surface reflects light. Higher sheen results in a smoother finish and a more durable surface coat, lower sheen results in coarser finishes and a less resilient surface coat.
FLAT This is a reflection-free finish. Flat has a chalky appearance that diffuses light. Because of this characteristic, flat paint tends to hide rough or dented surface imperfections. Flat sheens touch-up better since there is less contrast between new and weathered surfaces. Flat sheens are commonly used for low traffic areas, Master Bedrooms, Formal Dining Areas, Exterior body of homes. The “rough” texture of flat paint readily shows soil and scuffs and is not generally considered “washable.” However, Pratt and Lambert’s Accolade line does offer a “washable” flat sheen.
EGGSHELL As the name suggests, this sheen resembles the texture of an eggshell. Eggshell has a slight sheen apparent when viewed at an angle or when side-lighted. Eggshell provides greater warmth and depth to surface color. Generally more “washable” eggshell resists dirt and stains better than flat. Eggshell is a finish suitable for living rooms, family rooms and hallways. Also, it is a good choice for repainting aluminum or vinyl siding because it closely matches the original manufactured sheen.
SATIN Satin has a rich velvety surface and resists scuffing more easily than flat or eggshell. Satin is not quite shiny, but it does reflect more light than lower sheens. This quality makes satin a good choice for highlighting architectural details or use on exterior surfaces. Satin is a smooth finish that will shed rainwater without enough shine to reflect much sunlight. Satin is considered “scrubbable” and performs well in any room, especially in those areas that need to be washed frequently.
SEMI GLOSS Semi gloss has a glossy, but is not “wet” looking. Semi Gloss provides higher durability and resistance to dirt and stains. Semi Gloss is most commonly used for trim work, interior and exterior, to highlight features such as shutters, eaves or porches. Semi Gloss’ higher reflective quality will show more surface imperfections.
GLOSS The shiniest paint finish with the highest durability, and color intensity. Gloss dries to a mirror-like finish. Highly moisture resistant, gloss is a good choice for heavily used areas where fingerprints, grease and grime are common. This highly reflective finish shows every surface irregularity and imperfection. Most commonly used for trim work on cabinets, banisters, doorframes, windowsills, and window frames.
